FAQ
Is this game an AU or jamjar? We're an AU game. Is there a network system that the character can use? Or is this primarily action spam and prose? We're primarily an action and prose game. There is no real network that the characters can use. However, they can send text messages to one another. But the only way a character can send a message to another character is if they are added on their friend's list. There are ways to send people voice messages, though. Items like Message Crystals that are capable of recording. Keep in mind that Message Crystals can be really expensive. So, wait. What comms are we using for RP then? We have two communities for RPing specifically! We have ![]() ![]() There's also ![]() ![]() Why is my character suddenly stuck in an online game? How does that work? The moment your character signed onto SAO after its official service began they became trapped in the game. The person behind this is Kayaba Akihiko the creator of Sword Art Online. Sword Art Online is the very first VRMMORPG of its kind. The only way a character can experience Virtual Reality is through a FullDive. It's not possible to go through a FullDive without the proper equipment, which is the Nerve Gear that was also created by Kayaba Akihiko. And, the Nerve Gear, being the very first VR device of its kind, makes use of a high frequency electromagnetic microwaves emisor. Yes, that's right: microwaves. Kayaba made it so that if someone ever forcibly takes off the Nerve Gear from the player while they're in the game, then their brain will be fried and they will die. So, since they can't force the players to log off, they're stuck in the game until they can reach the top of Aincrad and clear the game. How are they still even alive in Real Life then? This is a quote from Kayaba that he said during his tutorial announcement. " 『Players, there is no need to worry about the bodies you left on the other side. As of this moment, all TV, radio, and Internet media are repeatedly reporting this situation; including the fact that there have been numerous deaths. The danger of having your Nerve Gear taken off has already all but disappeared. In a moment, using the two hours I have provided, all of you will be transported to hospitals or similar institutes and be given the best treatment. So you can relax... and concentrate on beating the game.』" The beds in the hospitals and facilities are gel-based and slow muscle degeneration. Essentially, they're all going to be comatose in the hospital until whenever the game gets cleared. Why would Kayaba trap over 10,000 players into a game? Does he even gain anything out of it? There's a conversation that two characters have in chapter six of volume one after having spent two years in Aincrad. Asuna: It's strange somehow... How should I put it, I feel like, I was born in this world and I've been living here until now or something. The rest is spoilers so we can't give everything away. Although if a character thought on it, then there's quite a few answers they could come up with on their own. Okay, so I understand all that now but... What can my character do from now on then? Anything they want! Of course, everyone reacts differently to a situation like this since most of them were living normal, every day lives before everything began. The light novel goes into detail about the players reactions upon realizing that no help would be coming: some cried, wailed, and some tried to dig up holes in the ground in their attempt to "destroy" the world, which wasn't successful, though, since the ground is considered an "immortal object." After this, the players were split into four groups. 1) A group that consists of 50% of the population, they remain in denial and refuse to accept the truth of the situation. These players spend their days in the Starting City and avoid doing anything that can put their life at risk. 2) This group consists 30% of the population, they formed a guild called the Aincrad Liberation Force which later earned the nickname, "The Army." They started up with the goal to work together, share all their information and resources among the players. 3) A group consisting of about 1,000 players. They turned to thievery as a means of survival after using up all their money. They didn't hurt or kill anyone, though. Well, at least not for the first year. 4) The final group. Their goal is to simply to clear the game. Some became merchants and craftsmen to support those who fight on the front lines and the last one hundred players became solo players. Ultimately, what your character does to survive or cope with the situation is up to them. Wait, my character isn't the type of person to play games! Much less an MMORPG. What should I do? Let's not forget that SAO isn't you average MMORPG. It's the very first VRMMORPG which lets the players experience and feel as if they were living in the game. There's a lot of interest and hype over the game because of this. Your character doesn't really need to be an avid gamer to take interest in it. Does this game have a rating? We're PG-13. And, as stated in the rules, we ask that players please rate and mark things properly depending on the situation. To quote it, "Mark anything that could make someone uncomfortable with warnings. Sex/smut should be done in locked logs/fade to black/museboxes and triggers should have a warning in the subject line. Keep in mind that you might be playing with someone underage. Those who are underage shouldn't play anything that's 18+." So, since this is AU, can you give me a general idea of what the setting is like? If we're talking about outside from Aincrad, it's the year 2022. The technology has advanced farther than today's technology, but it's still just a normal modern society. If you mean the game world of Aincrad, you can learn more about it at the terms/etymology page! But what if my character isn't human in their OU? Characters who weren't human in their original universe will have been born human in this universe. Speaking of which, what kind of characters can I app? Are there specific canons you don't accept? There aren't any forms of canon and media that we don't accept. We do ask that your character have enough personality formed in their canon. So that we know what to look for when reading the application. Do you accept original characters? At the moment we don't. I really need to drop this character but I don't want them to die! Are there any alternatives? Kayaba gives the characters a grace period of two hours in the Light Novel. This changed to ten minutes for power outages and internet service disconnections. In RP, we're taking some creative liberties and expanding upon this. If you need to drop a character, it's fine to say that they've been disconnected from the game for an indefinite period of time. It will still be impossible to remove the Nerve Gear since it runs on its own power source. If someone else reapplies for the same character, then one solution is to say that the character lost their memories of their previous time in the game due to the prolonged disconnect. I want to go on a hiatus! What about my character though? There's always the option of putting them on automode! If that doesn't work for you then the same solution for a drop can be used here as well. Don't worry about your character losing their memories. Since it's only in the case if someone reapplies for a character that was previously played by someone. Is it okay to fourth wall? We're an AU so fourth walling won't really be possible. However, if it's absolutely necessary for your character, then we suggest having them change the name of canon's characters and title. For example: Twilight could become Dusk and Edward could be changed to James. I'm not canon familiar with the Light Novel at all! Is it still possible to join despite that? Of course! We hope to do our best in making this game friendly towards those who aren't canon familiar as well. We have any information you may want to know linked in the navigation. And, if you're still unsure or have any questions, then please go ahead and ask. How can they clear the game? They must reach the topmost floor, the 100th, of Aincrad and defeat the boss that resides there. There's no way for a dead character to come back to life? Characters that die cannot be revived. There are no bodies left behind in SAO when their HP hits 0 as they will turn into blue particles before disappearing. As death is permanent in this game, when a character dies no one will be able to apply for them anymore. As the game progresses we will have a list of characters that have died. My character isn't from Japan! What about the language barrier? We're taking more creative liberties for this, but we do have a solution for this! SAO's system will now have a Language System implemented. Basically, what this system does is translate what the character is saying for the listener. Example: Character A only knows how to speak Japanese, but is speaking to Character B who only knows English. Thanks to the Language System, Character B will instead hear what Character A is saying in English in place of Japanese. How detailed are the fields, towns, dungeons and etc in SAO? Would it be exactly like how things are in Real Life? It's often commented on how realistic everything is in SAO. To the point that it's almost unbelievable that it's all just data. If you're thinking, "Isn't that too much for the game system to handle?", the light novel answers this question for us as well. There's an interesting system we learn of as a character examines a flower in the game. The flower was made with surprisingly high detail: from the veins of the flower, its five petals, the white stamen, and up to the green stem. Is there a Class System in SAO like a standard MMORPG? If so, what kind of classes are there? One of the interesting things about SAO is the fact that it doesn't have a Class system. However, there are titles that players have given to people based on what they specialize in. Examples include Beast Tamers, Blacksmiths, and Knights. Titles were made up by players and are not a part of the official SAO system itself. What's the exact difference between a Frontline and Normal player? You can learn more about this here at the terms/etymology page. On Normal players, though, they are referred to as normal players since they mostly play the game just to pastime until the game is cleared. Can I make my character to have been one of the Beta Testers? What's it like for the Beta Tester players in the game? Sure, go for it! There's a lot of animosity from normal players towards Beta Testers. This is because people feel that the Beta Testers had an unfair advantage over them information wise. Since they were Beta Testers that meant they were able to play SAO before anyone else which also means they had more experience. Some people even blame them for the deaths of other players that happened early on when SAO's service first started. We talk a bit more about this in the terms/etymology page under the Beater section. Even Beta Testers don't like talking about the fact that they were a part of the Beta Test. It's kind of like an unspoken rule among them to not talk about it. Where can my character live at? Are there places where they can rest? There are a few places that your character can live in during their time in SAO. One of those places is the Inn. Characters can rent out an Inn room for themselves. The game has a really strong privacy system in place for rented rooms. The room cannot be forced open, it's impossible to go in through the window, and other characters can't enter the room unless invited in by the room's owner. It's also impossible to eavesdrop on conversation in a rented room. On an interesting note, but apparently if you train the Eavesdrop skill high enough, then you can listen in on conversations held in rented rooms. Training that skill is generally considered a waste of time, though. So, usually, if someone is training that skill, then it's not too far fetch to think that they're up to something fishy... It's also possible for characters to buy their own houses in SAO! It can be really expensive especially depending on which floor the house is on. In the light novel, Asuna when asked about the price of her house, she answered that together with the house and furniture the cost was about 4000k altogether. So, wait, they're in a game but they can still get tired? Yes. Strangely enough, despite it not being their real bodies, it's still possible for characters to feel exhausted, hungry, cold, warm, and even sleepy. It's not possible to feel pain in the game, though. It can still be shocking when someone gets hit by a powerful force or another person. And, at the same time, characters don't really have to worry about personal hygiene in the game either. What's the Transfer Gates for exactly? How do they work? Transfer Gates can be located on every floor in its main city. Whenever a Floor is cleared someone has to go to the next main city to activate the new Transfer Gate. And, even if no one does this, in two hours the Gate would activate on its own. Transfer Gates can basically teleport people around on the various Floors without them always having to walk there. Although if your character is a player with an orange cursor since they can't enter the city, then they become unable to use the Gates themselves. What kind of skills are there in SAO? What can I have my character learn? Our skills list can be found here! Since the source material itself never really lists every possible kind of skill there is we don't plan on being very strict about it. We encourage everyone to have fun with this and make up skills. We do ask that you go to the skills post, fill out the provided form, and leave a comment on the post with the skill you made up, though. We ask for this so others may see what kind of skills there are as well. They may want to add it to their characters repertory. How does one form a Guild? Is it like forming a Party? You can start a Guild by going here here and signing the form there. It's not particularly difficult to form a Guild in SAO. They're more like one big group of people working together towards the same goal. Or it can simply be just a group of friends who like working together. Characters can party with each other when they invite the other to form one through the menu. Is there a certain etiquette that players expect in the game? There are a few Unspoken Rules amongst the players. 1) Don't talk about the Other Side aka the Real World. 2) High Level players shouldn't level or fight on the lower floors. It's considered rude towards the lower level players. 3) This one is mostly between Beta Testers, but don't talk about the fact that you were a part of the Beta Test. A lot of the etiquette in SAO are similar to the ones you would see in a regular MMORPG anyway. It's just that they kind of have a deeper meaning behind them given the situation. I hear there's a Marriage System in SAO. How does that work? In SAO, a marriage between two people can be considered a symbolization of their deep trust and faith towards that person. The reason behind this is that in a marriage the inventory between the two become shared. It's actually quite easy to simply divorce your partner and run off with their items. Items are really important to survival in SAO so you can see how that would be a huge blow. Aside from that, originally the marriage system only allowed for couples that were of the opposite gender to marry. For this RP, it's possible for all characters to marry either gender. What's Crafting items like in SAO? Does it require a certain amount of Skill Level? Crafting, cooking, sewing and things that require creation of something in SAO can be really random. A blacksmith in the light novel states that, despite being high in level with the skill, the only time she could make a really good, strong weapon is rare. So it doesn't happen very often. What this means is that creating something in SAO can be entirely luck of the draw. However, the higher the level of the skill, the character is more likely to successfully make something of good quality at the same time. Although the cooking system is a bit strange on its own as well. This is shown when Kirito, whose cooking skill level is extremely low, makes food for another character and the character says it tastes good. Kirito points out that the only reason that's possible is because the ingredient he used was already a High Class item on its own. What kind of weapons can my character use? Weapons are really important in SAO. The game's tag line is: «A World Where The Sword Symbolizes The Player» Here we will present a list of weapons that can be found and used in the game. Weapons in SAO It's possible to start out with a different weapon besides a One-Handed Sword, but they'll need to train and level their skill(s) in that area in order to fully utilize the weapon to its fullest. Can characters still get sick? No, it's not possible for characters to get sick while in Aincrad. What are the most notable Guilds? How can I have my character become a Front Line fighter? We would like to avert your attention to the Guilds list. Since the game has yet to start there are no Guilds that have built a name for themselves yet. Is there an age restriction on SAO In-Game too? How old does my character have to be allowed to register? There's an age restriction that's set in place while setting up the Nerve Gear. Anyone under the age of thirteen are restricted from joining the game. However, there are ways around this so even a few 12 and 11 year old kids can manage to get in if they really try. How can my character get money? Are there jobs they can do? Col can be obtained from killing monsters. It's possible to sell items and make money off that too. Some people start their own shops and sell the items they make themselves too. It's also possible to buy a place for a character's shop if they're interested in starting their own business. It usually costs about as much as buying a house. My character killed/hurt/stole from another person! Is there any repercussions for this? Check out our the term/etymology post here! The Player Killing section goes into detail about this. How can my character know if a friend of theirs died? Is there a way to for them to find out? There's the Monument of Life and if your character had them added as a friend if their name isn't on the list anymore, then that should tell them too. Since if their name disappears from the friend add list that can really only mean one thing. My character wants to change their look! Is that possible? It is! Some characters are even able to go as far as changing their hair color thanks to certain special items. It's easy to change how you look in the game since it's so realistic. At one point in the light novel, Asuna even asks Kirito why he always wears the same thing. Characters can even have regular clothes that isn't just armor and equipment. What about quests? What kinds will there be? We will be posting quests at the beginning of every month. Quests that will range from big plots to small plots. It also heavily depends on the most recent floor that's been unlocked. What the quests entail and what your character can acquire from it will be included in the posts. All quests will be different and difficulty level will range from easy to hard. When will the next Floor Boss fight be? Whenever the characters find the Boss room! Even if no characters find it in-game, we're aiming to hopefully have at least have one Floor Boss fight per month. Do items last forever? Or do they get worn out eventually? It's similar to what you would find in a standard MMORPG. Food items eventually become spoiled, weapons can break if not repaired properly, and clothes can become worn out. This is all a part of the Durability system of items in SAO. When an item's durability runs out then it will disappear into blue particles. It's not really possible to stop food from spoiling, but it's a different matter for clothes and weapons. Blacksmiths can fix weapons. The same can be said for clothes if your character is able to find someone who has their sewing skill leveled. Are there NPCs? Are they possible to interact with? NPCs work like standard non-player characters in a normal game. Everything they say and do is programmed by the system. The most they will ever do is their "job" that was given to them by the Game System. For example, Lizbeth, a character in the SAO light novel, runs a business where there's also an NPC that helps and works in her shop. The NPC usually greets and sells merchandise for her. The NPC, however, will not say or do anything that isn't a part of their programming. How can my character become a Beast Tamer? It's actually really difficult to become a Beast Tamer, which is why they are considered a rare "class" in SAO. Sometimes on rare occasions an aggressive monster will show interest in a player, when that happens the player must feed the monster to successfully tame it, but it also requires the player to have not killed that many monsters of its type. Due to the last requirement it becomes quite difficult to tame a monster. Can I apply for a character from SAO canon? Sure, go for it! The only canon characters that aren't available for playing is Heathcliff and Yui. Since this is an AU, though, all SAO characters experience will revert back to how they began the game. How do characters level up? How can I determine what my character's level is right now? Characters gain levels by defeating monsters and gaining experience points. Right now we have a "level limit" system in place to help give players an idea of what the highest level their character can reach is. The level limit system depends on what the highest most recent unlocked floor is. As floors are unlocked then the level limit will also increase. You can learn more about this here. What are standard stats in SAO? The light novel never really goes into detail about which stats there are in SAO. The only stat you can be certain isn't there is magic since in SAO players can't use magic. For general idea of what stats there are, Strength, Defense, Hit Points, Luck, and Speed. There are also Skills which you can learn more about here. Are there tags we need to use when posting? Yes, there are. When posting or commenting to either ![]() ![]() |

That said, the only characters from SAO that we won't be allowed for applying is Heathcliff and Yui. And, since the game is an AU that's going to be starting from the very beginning of SAO's service, any knowledge they had during the course of the light novel will revert back to how it was in the beginning.

One of the survival aspects that comes into play in SAO is getting the resources they need to survive. In some cases there will be items, monsters, and quests that can only be done once. a few times, or just take a while to spawn again at all.
It's due to this system that some players expressed animosity towards Beta Testers in the light novel as well. Since the Beta Testers had the knowledge to know where those resources are in the beginning.
That said, we'll be avoiding having quests that can only be done once, but we do hope to have quests that will create competition amongst the characters. We'll also have quests where everyone gets rewarded too.

Also, so that we may give you a more detailed answer, could you clarify what kind of changes to their appearance you're thinking of specifically?
no subject
As for the kind of changes I was thinking about... I'm considering applying for a young character that's about 12-13 years old. For the start of the game, I thought it would be fun to have them hide behind an avatar that looks far older than their RL self. Would that be possible?

So, yes, they most likely only ever had to lie about their age since they did manage to get into the game.

1) I'm apping a character who has a known real name (first name only) but goes by an alias for most of his time in the series (which takes place in the future after he resurfaced with a new identity). Since I'm apping him as his past self, who is using his future alias/self as his game avatar, is it alright to use a mix of his past and future self for the AU? I hope this makes sense. I wasn't sure if I was overthinking things by providing samples and appearances for both.
2) And in terms of events taking place either in Beta or at the very beginning of the game: I wanted to have a handwaved event take place with my character either pre-game or just after everyone is locked in, that would involve an NPC from his series being killed by him accidentally to analog events in his canon that impact his personality. Is the announcement going to come when we are all within the game already, and if so can I handwave this as happening shortly thereafter? The killed character is minor enough not to be appable anyway ..at least as herself explicitly (it's complicated and no one ever plays her anyway, lol.)
3) How much customization is available for the appearance for avatars/weapons? Namely, the character has a very distinctive sword in canon, and while it of course won't have its magical properties here I'm wondering if it's possible for him to have it in design (it's basically a normal but weird looking one handed sword, except it has a rectangular blade and he uses a backhanded grip to wield it).
And since the mirror will be handed out early on but after the start of initial gameplay, does this mean avatar appearances will be permanently gone after that point, or can characters then make changes like growing out their hair, eye color changes, things like that?
Oops that got long.. sorry about that!
no subject
1) If we're understanding this right, do you mean that you're going to be playing the character with an AU combination of their pre-canon development self and post-canon development self? Or do you mean that you want to use his future self as an avatar for his appearance in the game? If you mean the former, then as long as his development is explained in the BG section it should be fine. If you mean the latter, then that might not be possible. It's fine to use his future appearance as an avatar at the start, but after Kayaba's announcement everyone's avatars will disappear and be replaced with their actual real life appearance. However, it could be manageable that he could change his appearance when more options are opened as the game progresses.
2) If the character isn't appable (as in she doesn't have enough canon material to have a solid personality), then there shouldn't be any problems. Although, if you don't mind, could you elaborate on the NPC character a bit more? We would just like to hear a bit more on it ourselves to give you a more defined and clearer answer to your question. However, and we're sorry if we're misunderstanding this, but it should be noted that the Beta Test version of SAO didn't have the permanent death aspect. Virtual Immersion is going to be starting from Day 1 of SAO's official service and Kayaba's announcement will be on the same day. Due to this, right now the AU Background section is mostly meant to help us learn about your character's life before they joined SAO. So mentioning that event isn't necessary. Unless you want to note to us that it will be occurring which is fine. If that's the development you wish to take your character in the game, then it's okay to handwave it after the game's opening.
3) We're never really told if it's possible for characters to physically change the appearance of their weapons. It's certainly possible to get them broken, but personal customization is never mentioned. However, we do learn that it's possible to have weapons custom made if the character is capable of smithery or if they request a blacksmith to make it for them. Requesting a blacksmith to make a new weapon can be extremely expensive, though. That said, if you wish for your character to have that weapon specifically, then later on in the game it's possible to say that maybe they got it from a rare item drop or had it made for them. There is a variety of unknown weapons in Aincrad that can be created randomly or dropped by monsters.
Hopefully these answer your questions! We're sorry if we misunderstood anything. If we didn't explain anything clearly, then please tell us so that we can clarify it better for you.
Same player, alt journal!
1. Actually I intend to do both! I'm mixing in bits of his backstory that his "present" aka future self has while keeping him himself as his background from his past (as a player), partly to incorporate my canon mate apping with me and partly to incorporate pieces which I mentioned in question 2. However his avatar is based on the design of his future self, which basically entails long hair and differently colored eyes in the game world. So yeah basically I was just wondering if they'd get options to change their appearance especially things like can they grow out their hair etc! Except I just reread the FAQ and I see that it is so disregard that question, lol;;;
2. Phew, this is where this canon gets complicated. Basically the NPC is my character's girlfriend in the past. Now the reason this is complicated is she is heavily implied to have been brainwashed, experimented on and eventually becoms another, playable character (whom my character later kills)- however these connections are all heavily implied, nothing has ever been explained explicitly. The other complication is that much later in canon, a being that looks exactly like her self in the past appears, and is implied to be some kind of AI either created by her or spawned from her consciousness or some kooky thing like that. The character herself is completely different in personality to the two characters 'based on' her, but she literally only appears in a few paragraphs of a flashback story, so I figured she isn't appable. And I'm the only person I've ever seen that's played any version of her anyway ;;
And yup, I plan for it to happen after the announcement somehow, but I figured I'd mention it since it would impact some of the aspects of his personality section that I mentioned.
3. Alright, he'll probably try to get it smithed at some point later, then! In the meantime he has a sword he uses in canon before he gets that one except Ta basically like a giant slab of rock shaped into a giant cleaver/zweihander...
Thank you for your detailed answers! <3 I hope I explained things more clearly, his canon is kinda complicated lol.
Edit: Oops I ended up with another 2 quick questions:
-Since my character's canon is a fighting game and he actually has a canon movelist, can I adapt these moves as Sword Skills/Extra Skills? Retuning them to fit the SAO world, of course.
-Is t possible for a character to switch between weapon classes (ie wield a twohander at one point then switch to a one hander)? I'm... Not really sure what a sword like this might qualify as but he wields it one-handed: http://www.fightersgeneration.com/characters/sol-order.jpg

2) Okay, we considered it. While none of the mods are familiar with Guilty Gear, we are familiar with BlazBlue so the complicated situation is understandable. We'll assume that the girlfriend version and playable character version are two different characters in the case that anyone wants to apply for the playable version. That said, we would appreciate it if you left a note on this matter in your application. If you're willing to make plans/and or retcon in the case someone wants to apply for the character ever happens, then that would be helpful to note in the application as well.
As for your last two questions, yes, it's fine to adapt canon skills into SAO. Just make sure to reply to the skills post and keep in mind that those skills will also be made available to everyone in the game as well. And, yes, it's possible for characters to switch between their preferred weapons! In the source material, there's a staff user that originally had plans to switch weapons as well so it's fine.

Thank you so much for putting up with my ridiculous questions and gratuitous edits! <3

In canon this system is explained to us by Yui who is an AI that's a part of SAO's system. Her initial job was to watch over the mental state of the players, but after SAO began she received strange orders that forbade her from getting involved with the players thus rendering her incapable of doing anything.
When she did do something on her own finally and the system became aware of her irregular actions it deleted her from the game. This was one of the reasons as to why she became one of the canon characters that isn't appable right now. So, unfortunately while AIs are possible in SAO, right now they aren't allowed for apping.
We're sorry if this ruins any application plans that you had.
no subject
Is it possibly AIs will be open for apping sometime in the future, or would it be better for me just to think of an alternate background for the character?
no subject
For now we suggest thinking of an alternate background in the case we decide against it.

Is there any way to tell if an account/PC in the main game is the same as the one used in the beta. Not in the sense of the username, but like the IP address or whatever. For details, I was considering using a part in canon as account swiping a user's copy or email address to get said copy. Hence needing to know how it works.

I know there's that unspoken rule to not talk about RL, but that's broken often in the series itself, and in any case there will always be a few outliers who don't care. Also, there's the fact that characters will still deal with their thoughts on their canonmates in their inner monologue and so forth.
So, yeah. o3o How will that work? Are we just going to be tiptoeing really hard around it?

The same applies to the character's alternate history concerning those canonmates. We'd like to trust the players' discretion concerning the alternate backstories of their characters. As such, the players are free to set up and reference their characters' backstory as much as they like in-game if that is indeed in character for them. Still, if a castmate is going to be apped, however, it'll have to be up to all the players involved to check with each other about their shared backstory first, which again, depending on the circumstances involved, a certain amount of retconning will be allowed as well.
Hopefully this will answer your question! If there's any part that wasn't clear and you'd like us to elaborate, then please feel free to tell us so that we can clarify it for you.
"Important" IRL Parallels
Would it be okay to make people in a characters' AU background important figures/leaders in
That is if they don't conflict with SAO's canon, plot, or the AU backgrounds of characters already in the RP.

Basically, it's fine if anyone has their character be an important figure. The only impossible things we could think of as an example, as far as important figures go, would be to say that your character was one of the people who helped Kayaba create SAO.
Otherwise as long as it doesn't affect any of the things you listed, then you're good to go.

Can characters start with a different weapon skill instead of straight swords? For example, rapiers or maces. Or alternatively, how easy is it to switch weapons early on? Could they just buy the basic weapon they want and instantly get the starting skill for it through equipping it? And are there going to be limits on how many skills characters can have at their level range?

Also, in the light novel's "Aria in the Starless Night" chapter, when Kirito first met Asuna she was already a rapier user on the first floor. "The skill was the first skill rapier users learn: the single thrust attack «Linear»." It's possible to start out with another weapon, but they'll need to train and level their skill(s) in that area in order to fully utilize the weapon to its fullest.
And, you didn't bring it up, but re-reading the answer to "What kind of weapons can my character use?" it was poorly phrased and confusing so apologies there too. So thank you for the question on this matter as well.

More justifiable question: what kind of freedom do players have when choosing their initial outfit? It's been a while since I've watched the first episode...

Also all characters start with clothes like these. As far as how customizable they are, a character can get them in different colors.

(I'd probably app in this guy, too, so another question:
How easily can people cover themselves up? This guy's face is burnt and albino and typically he hides it with headgear, but... Where could he easily find the means to do so? Also, how fine-tuned is the Nerve Gear's representation? He's burnt along his body (and I typically play him as missing his right arm) and pale. Would that carry over?)

But, again, this might change in the future, so it's not something that's a solid rule that will never change.
Also, it's possible for character's to buy equipment that covers their face and appearance. It's easy to customize how they look in SAO as when it was being created they had aimed to make it as realistic as possible. As for the Nerve Gear, it fully scans the person's body and features.
- From Volume 1 of Sword Art Online, Chapter 3.
Basically, the Nerve Gear has the character's physical traits recorded and all of it will be carried over into SAO's system.
